It had been close to three months to their marriage. Apart from the eye contact and hand holding on the wedding night there had been no change in their relationship.
Aman had slowly started to lose hope. Whenever he entered a room where she was present, she disappeared stating one or the other reason. Whenever he tried to talk to her or hold her hand, touch her, she made excuses and ran away. And they've not held eye contact since their wedding night.
He even postponed their honeymoon stating that they weren't ready for it thinking she might not be comfortable yet and she never stopped him.
But what troubled him the most was that almost three months down and he still hasn't shared a bed with her. Every night he looked at her in hope that she would now ask him to join her. Tell him that she was fine with him being in bed with her, but every night his hopes shattered a little and he went to sleep on the couch with disappointment and longing.
Was she even happy with him? Did he even want this marriage?
These were the thoughts that have started evading his mind now. And Sapna had noticed this.
Apparently a few days ago she saw his pillow and blanket on the couch and inquired about it. He couldn't get himself to lie to her and he ended up conceding in her.
She was shocked and insisted that she'd talk to Tamanna. Aman denied this thinking she might feel like Aman was back bitching about her. Which he was not by the way.
But Sapna was Sapna and she wasn't going to let it go. She had known Tamanna since forever and she knew her best friend needed a piece of mind. Or she'll ruin her own marriage without her even knowing it.
The two were sitting in her room gossiping and giggling. Sapna was trying to find a way to approach the topic and decided it was best to do it through what she was best at. Teasing her.
“So? What are your plans on making me a bua?”
She teased nudging her side and within seconds Tamanna went red. Sapna chuckled and pinched her cheeks.
“You're so cute. Bhabhi!”
She teased and Tamanna hit her arm.
“Stop it Sapna!”
She exclaimed and Sapna laughed. Come on! Give me the reaction! And Tamanna did not disappoint. For a few seconds later she heard her whisper.
“And you're not becoming a bua anytime soon. Nothing's happened between us anyway.”
The last part was such a low whisper that Sapna nearly missed it.
“Hain! Matlab? Girl! It's been almost three months since your marriage. Chalo not everything but at least you guys must have kissed and made out right?”
Tamanna went even redder imagining it all but slowly shook her head. Sapna sighed knowing the reason somewhere.
“What have you been thinking? Ek baat mujhe bata Tamanna. Are you not happy with bhai? Did you not want this marriage?”
Tamanna looked at her and said seriously.
“Aisa kuch nhi hai. I-I love him Sapna. But tujhe pta hai na how shy and reserved I am. I just don't know how to convey my feelings.”
“You have to babe! He is your husband. And I know it's not my place to tell you but lately bhai have been feeling like you're not happy with him.”
Tamanna looked at her wide eyed.
“I am happy Sapna. I just don't know how to tell him that.”
She sighed and Sapna held her hand.
“He is making an effort, Tamanna. Just acknowledge them and accept them, rather than running away.”
Tamanna nodded and processed what she was told. Were her actions really giving way to these misunderstandings.
The same night when Aman returned, he was ready for the same to repeat. Him entering and Tamanna leaving the room.
Which is exactly what happened. He entered the living room sitting on the sofa and Tamanna went to the kitchen. He sighed knowing it was futile. He needed to have a word with her.
But his disappointment turned into surprise when she returned back with a glass of water and put it near him.
“Paani?”
He nodded in a trance. Was she real? Or was he imagining?
“Khaana laga du?”
She asked and he choked on the water. She rubbed his back looking at him in concern. Calming himself down he asked.
“Huh?”
“Khaana?”
He nodded and she went back to the kitchen. He looked at Sapna who was looking at him amused. He knew she had talked to her even after him asking her not to.
They retired to their rooms after dinner. Tamanna came out of the washroom after changing into her nightwear and saw Aman setting his bed on the couch.
Sapna's words from earlier played in her mind. She wanted to ask him to join her. But words got stuck in her throat. Aman looked at her standing near the bed fidgeting with her fingers.
He waited for her to call him, like he did every night. But when she turned and walked towards the bed he sighed and called her.
She turned and he asked.
“Kuch baat krni thi.”
“Ji?”
“Yaha aao!”
He called her closer to which she complied and stood at a distance from him, with her head still bowed down.
“Idhar baitho.”
He made her sit on the couch and sat himself beside her. Tamanna felt her heart race. What did he want to talk about? Was he going to leave her already? Because she couldn't get words out of her mouth? Did she ruin her marriage already because of her shy nature?
Tears formed in her eyes which she gulped and blinked her eyes to get rid of them. He held her hand and asked in a tone which gave away his fears.
“Are you not happy Tamanna? Did you not want this marriage?”
She shook her head in an attempt to explain him but yet again no words came out. Her throat clogged with tears she'd gulped.
“Then why? Why do you keep running away from me? Why do you never look at me? Why do leave the room when I enter? Why Tamanna?”
She continued to shake her head as tears flowed down her eyes. He held her chin and made her look into his eyes.
“Kyu nazre churati ho? Kyu mere paas aane se ghabrati ho?”
She sobbed and held on his hand tighter and he shifted closer to her cupping her face.
“Kya baat hai Tamanna? Please tell me. Please! Har raat iss umeed mai tumhe dekhta hu ki shayad ab tum kaho ki tum comfortable ho aur mere saath bed share kr skti ho. Lekin harr raat tum aise hi, bina kuch kahe so jaati ho.”
She sniffed and looked down again. He immediately made her look at him and said sternly.
“Look into my eyes when we talk. Why do you never look at me?”
She took deep breaths to calm herself and he gave her the time. Her breathing finally got normal but when she still did not utter a word, he lost hope and left her hands. She looked at him in panic and started.
“I-I-I am not very expressive Aman.”
He heard her whisper. His attention diverted back to her and he saw her fidgeting with her fingers.
“I have always been extremely shy and reserved. Kabhi apni feelings express krni ki need hi nhi rhi. Not with mumma papa. Not with Sapna. They understood my feelings without me even uttering a word. Toh mujhe lagne lag gaya ki sab aisa kr skte hai. Isliye maine apni feelings kabhi kisi se express hi nhi kri. And now I don't know how to.”
He knew she wasn't lying. The tremble and vulnerability in her voice were the proofs.
He held her hands to stop her fidgeting and said.
“Express nhi kr skti lekin agar mai kuch puchhu toh uska jawab toh de skti ho na?”
She nodded and he smiled. He could work with that. If she was shy and unexpressive, he'd become expressive for both of them. He was ready to give 90% if she was willing to put in the remaining 10%.
