Vardhan was lying on the terrace facing the sky. There was a time when he and his best friend used to lie there for hours and talk their hearts out. They were more like brothers.
And Vardhan missed him. He was staring at the sky but his eyes were unfocused due to the unshed tears.
He lost his soul brother, Armaan, two months ago. It was an accident. A car crash. And he wasn't there when it happened. He was out of town for his office work.
He couldn't even see him one last time. But he knew how depressed Armaan was in his last days. All because of her.
Vardhan wiped the tears that fell from his eyes.
She was the sole cause of Armaan's depressed mental state. He hated cheaters and she was one of them. Cheating on his best friend and hurting him to such an extent that he loses his senses.
He didn't know what happened but he knew that Armaan and her had an argument after Vardhan told him about her folly.
He had seen her hugging and roaming with a guy hand in hand on the streets. He wouldn't have assumed anything else if the guy hadn't been holding her waist intimately and kissing her cheek time and again.
And the wide grin on her face told him that this wasn't the first time it was happening.
Vardhan had never met her in reality. He had only heard about her from Armaan. And the way Armaan had behaved and talked after their first date together screamed how much he had liked her and how whipped he was going to be.
And he was whipped. Vardhan had seen the spark in his eyes and the glow on his face whenever he talked about her.
Vardhan and her schedules never matched and he could not meet her yet. But he knew how she looked because Armaan had shown him their pictures numerous times.
He loved to flaunt his girlfriend. He loved her. But she betrayed him. Vardhan still remembered the day clearly as if it were yesterday.
Vardhan was out for grocery shopping when he heard someone giggling. At first he ignored the couple not wanting to invade their privacy.
But then the girl turned around and Vardhan was shocked. It was his best friend's girlfriend. With someone else. Someone who wasn't Armaan.
He didn't want to judge and create misunderstanding between the two because he had seen how happy Armaan was with her.
But then the man grabbed her waist and placed a kiss on her cheek making her giggle even more.
Vardhan clicked their pictures as a proof, knowing Armaan would not believe it.
He got home not knowing how to disclose it to him. It would break his heart for sure. Armaan wasn't back home by his usual time and Vardhan knew he would be with his girlfriend. Or well, cheating girlfriend.
Vardhan heard the doorbell at 11 in the night and opened the door to see a very happy and giddy Armaan.
"Why do you look like you're high?"
Vardhan teased although his heart broke for the guy. He would he shattered after knowing the truth.
"I'm high on dopamine."
Armaan said with a wide grin and slumped on the couch with a happy sigh.
"Tha kaha tu itni der?"
"I was on a date. With my girl."
He said grinning wide remembering the date. Two months of them dating and this was the first time, the two had shared a kiss.
"She's so perfect! I love her!"
He confessed and Vardhan closed his eyes.
"Kuch baat krni thi."
Armaan hummed still lost in his girlfriend's thoughts and Vardhan sat before him.
"I saw her today. Your girlfriend. Grocery shopping krne gaya tha and she was there."
Armaan opened his eyes and frowned.
"She did not tell me."
"I didn't introduce myself."
Armaan nodded in understanding and Vardhan continued.
"She was there with a guy."
His eyes snapped to Vardhan and he narrowed his eyes.
"Ok? And? He could be her brother or cousin or maybe only a friend. Mujhe kyu bta raha hai?"
"Because he didn't seem like just a friend and definitely not blood related. He was kissing and holding her like a boyfriend does."
Armaan was quiet. He trusted Vardhan more than his life. But he also trusted and loved his girlfriend.
"That's -that's not true!"
"I wish it wasn't. Look at this."
He showed her the video and Armaan felt his heart shatter into pieces. His eyes turned red with unshed tears and his throat felt heavy with the betrayal he was feeling.
"Send it to me."
He spoke in a deadly calm voice and walked towards his room.
"Armaan! Don't do anything stupid."
Vardhan said scared of his best friend's state of mind at the moment.
"I won't. Itna weak nhi hu. But I do want answers from her. Was I not enough? Was why love not enough? And what did today mean for her? That kiss- it felt too real. I didn't feel like she is cheating...cheating on me. How can she fake something like this with such perfection? How? And why?"
Vardhan felt the pain, the hurt in his voice and patted his back in support. But Armaan didn't cry. Not in front of Vardhan at least.
The next day, Armaan had went out the first thing in the morning to meet the woman who was allegedly cheating on him.
"Armaan?"
"I'm going to get my answers."
With that he moved out of the house with his car keys.
Only if Vardhan had stopped him that day. Only if he had advised Armaan to call that woman home and question her there instead of going out. Only if he had done that, Armaan would have been alive.
Vardhan was in a flight to Indonesia for business and received the news of Armaan's accident when he landed at the airport in Indonesia. There was no early flight or same day flight available and he could reach back in Delhi only two days later.
Armaan's last rites were done till then. He couldn't even see his best friend one last time. And it was all because of that woman. That one cheating woman. He hated her with all his guts. She was living her life out there, having fun with some new guy while his best friend lost his after the betrayal she gave him.
